We care for and rehabilitate orphaned and injured wildlife and exotic animals.  Please call us if you need help with a squirrel or other mammal.  We're happy to take them in at no charge to you. We love the babies and will make sure they get the care they need so they can go back to their homes in the wild.

About Our Hotel

What we do for them

When the squirrels arrive, they get a full check up to make sure they aren't sick and don't have any injuries we need to help fix. The most common alement is a squirrel cold that needs to be helped so it doesn't turn into pneumonia.  Another thing we commonly see in our new guests is red ant bites or flea bites.

Generally, new guests come to the hotel dehydrated. For the first 24 hours, most of them get homeade pedialyte (a mix of water, sugar, and sodium) to help get their fluid levels up. Once they are hydrated, they can start drinking their formula.  They get fed every 3.5 to 4 hours (unless they are pinkies, in which case they need to be fed more often) until they start eating solid food and start to refuse to eat that often.

They stay with us until they wean themselves. We will feed them their formula as long as they are willing to drink it.  Generally, they wean themselves sometime between 12 and 16 weeks.  If they are born in the fall, however, they will overwinter with us. We overwinter them because they won't have time to acclimate to the colder weather. Their best chance of survival is to wait to go out on their own in the spring.

Once we know spring has sprung, we get them ready for release. They spend several weeks in their release cage getting used to the sounds of "the wild," and eventually we open the door (and, truthfully, I follow them around like a crazy person until I'm confortable knowing they will be okay).

Once their outside release cage has been opened, they often stick around for a while (Scoobie stuck around for over a month), but eventually they move out into their own drey, and we start the process over again with the new babies that check in.
